Helen Zia: One Dope Lesbian Queen

Looking for a new role model? May I present Helen Zia: the ultimate badass. A lesbian journalist, author, and activist, Helen Zia has worked to make the world a better place for both the LGBTQ+ and Asian American community for nearly four decades.

How has she done this, you ask? To start, she played a significant role in the U.S.’ push for same-sex marriage equality. In 2010, she was a crucial witness in the federal marriage equality case decided by the U.S. Supreme Court. In addition, she and her wife Lia Shigemura married in San Fransisco in 2008, making them one of the first same-sex married couples in the United States, paving the way for the rest of the lesbian community to follow suit.

But Helen Zia first came into the public eye when she became a public spokesperson and primary organizer of the campaign that sought justice for Vincent Chin. Through her work, she helped ignite the 1980s Asian American rights movement and empowered the Asian American community.

She continues to do powerful work to this day. She’s written for the prominent LGBTQ+ magazine OUT and Ms. Magazine, The New York Times, and more. Her latest book, Last Boat out of Shanghai: The Epic Story of the Chinese Who Fled Mao’s Revolution, just hit stores last year.

Basically, she’s fantastic. And, she doesn’t get nearly enough credit. Do I hear a national Helen Zia day in the future? Us gays can only hope. But, for now, support this powerhouse lesbian activist and consider buying her book today!
