How Ratched was the surprise lesbian happy ending we all needed

Warning: Contains spoilers, some graphic content, and two cute as hell lesbians

As you’ll come to notice, our Lesbian Pride Newsletter not only shines lights on lesbian couples in movies and TV, but we’re primarily focused on talking about shows that have happy lesbian endings. And what better place to start than with Ryan Murphy’s latest show Ratched, which had its first season air last year in 2020.

Played by the phenomenal Sarah Paulson, Ratched follows the backstory of Nurse Ratched as a prequel of Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. The show follows Ratched and her relationship with her murderous brother and, in the process, follows her as she discovers her own sexuality.

Stuck indoors because of the pandemic, last year we all needed TV content with light at the end of the tunnel. Surprisingly, Ratched gave us just that. Despite existing in the horror/thriller genre (a genre notorious for over-the-top killings and devastating tragedy), the writers made sure to point all of that gore, terror, and tragedy to other areas in the show outside of the lesbian relationship. So although Ratched is a psychological thriller, none of the horror ever revolves around their lesbian relationship, a groundbreaking courtesy hardly ever extended to lesbian characters in TV and movies.

Not only does this couple get the happy ending they deserve, but they also are active lesbians. They go to cool 1950s lesbian bars, have steamy makeout sessions, and flirtatiously eat oysters together (trust us, it works). We won’t spoil the ending for you, but rest assured that season one ends in the best way possible.

We’re not the only ones to recognize the greatness that is Ratched. The show was also lauded by critics and audiences and was nominated for two Critics Choice Super Awards, one GLAAD Media Award, and three Golden Globes awards. Thankfully, Netflix has already greenlit season two, so while we anxiously await news of the specific release date, rumor has it that the second season will air sometime in 2021. While we wait, at least we can re-watch their super cute relationship over and over again. Is ten times too many times to re-binge a season? Asking for….myself.
