The Lesbian Bar Project

By now, you’re probably pretty well informed on the lesbian bar problem in America and how all of our lesbian bars are disappearing at fast rates. You may have remembered us talking about the loss of our lesbian bars a few newsletters ago.

Thankfully, a group of filmmakers, artists, and actors have joined together to create a really cool organization that’s trying to fix it. May we present: The Lesbian Bar Project

The Lesbian Bar Project is an organization on a mission to save the last 21 lesbian bars in the United States. Not only have lesbian bars been steadily closing for the past few decades, but now with the hardships of Covid-19, they’ve all but become extinct.

Creators, filmmakers, and storytellers Erica Rose & Elina Street discovered our Lesbian Bars (+) loss in the United States and jumped to action. They launched The Lesbian Bar Project as a PSA campaign narrated by the wonderful Lea DeLaria. The PSA alone raised over $117k for the participating bars.

Now they’re continuing their fight for Lesbian Bars with a new campaign with a new goal to raise 200k for bars during Pride Month of 2021.

Among those helping with these efforts are Erica Rose, Elina Street, Brydie O’Connor, Charles Hayes IV, and Lea Delaria.

Lea Delaria most likely will ring bells for anyone who’s been a fan of Netflix hit Orange Is The New Black, but Lea’s creative career goes back a lot more than that. She’s also a comedian and jazz musician (she released one of the best David Bowie cover albums I’ve ever heard of), and she’s just an all-around cool lady.

Which means, lesbians! If you’re in a place where you can donate, consider helping these organizations today by contributing here. The donation window ends in just a couple of weeks, so if you’re in a place to support our community (whether it be financially or by simply spreading the word), we’d love for you to do so!
