Warning: Contains spoilers, some graphic content, and two cute as hell lesbians

Move over, Orange is the New Black, there’s a new women prison’s show in town and it’s called Wentworth. Okay, well maybe not new, new (the first season aired back in 2013) but seeing as how the show features the best lesbian couple in television history, it’s still worth talking about.

Bold statement? Maybe. But I’m not here to talk about your Waverly and Nicole or your Alex and Maggie: I want to talk about Franky and Bridget

For those who don’t know, Franky and Bridget are two characters on the critically acclaimed Australian drama Wentworth, which has garnered several heavy-hitter awards and stolen the hearts of hundreds of thousands of viewers worldwide.

Other than the phenomenal writing, the show is worth a watch as it features multiple lesbian characters. By far the best two are Franky and Bridget.

When we first meet Franky, she’s a deeply troubled inmate of Wentworth Correctional Facility burdened by such severe anger issues that her life is in shambles. How troubled, you ask? She’s in the middle of serving a seven-year sentence for aggravated assault from when she scalded a cook with a pan of boiling oil. Which, yikes. But in season three life starts to change for Franky when she’s introduced to the prison’s new psychiatrist: Bridget.

As Franky and Bridget start working together, Franky pushes through her emotional issues and undergoes real growth. And although Bridget tries to keep the relationship professional, eventually she and Franky fall in love and become romantically involved, which blooms into a full relationship once Franky is released from prison.

Many have commented on how groundbreaking their relationship is. Not only are they two out lesbians on television, but also because they have a happy ending (looking at you, The 100). It’s also revolutionary to see a character as troubled as Franky simply confront her issues head on, put in the emotional work, and come out of that work to her happily ever after.

Their relationship is inspiring, hopeful, and happy. Plus, they’re hot as hell (look at those tattoos!). What more could you want?

Although Franky and Bridget have since left the show (on happy terms, we promise), Wentworth still has a host of other lesbian characters. Check out season 9, which airs late 2021.
