President of Tokyo Olympics Committee visits Tokyo Pride House

Last month, Japan put another foot forward when the President of the Tokyo Olympics Committee visited the Tokyo Pride House. This is the second big step from Japanese leaders; earlier this year, Japan made headlines when a court ruled that same-sex marriage bans are unconstitutional, sending a wave of LGBTQ+ support rippling throughout the country.

Now Japan continues to step forward when the President of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Seiko Hashimoto, visited Pride House Tokyo Legacy, the first permanent LGBTQ+ community center in Japan.

During her visit, she says that she hopes the 2020 Olympics will help deepen their understanding of the LGBTQ people and make Tokyo Olympic 2020 a turning point to “firmly tackle the issue of unity in diversity.”

“There are people who cannot go to Pride House,” said Hashimoto during the visit. “There are still many people who are unaware of this great place. So together with Tokyo 2020, I hope the games will be an opportunity for many people to deepen their understanding of LGBTQ (people),” she said, reported by Reuters.

All we can say is we’re so happy to see Japan stepping in the right direction. Any amount of progress is progress in our book.
