Germany Apologizes to LGBT Gay and Lesbians

Germany puts itself at the front of the lesbian and gay cause when they recently owned up to their past mistakes in a big way.

Last week, the German parliament voted in favor of the rehabilitation and compensation of soldiers who have faced past discrimination based on their sexual orientation. Until as late as 2000, the German military held an incredibly homophobic policy that lesbian and gay soldiers could not be promoted as they posed a discipline threat.

Obviously, this led to serious negative consequences for German gay soldiers such as depression, a lack of financial resources open discrimination, etc.

But we’re excited to say that Germany is actively working to correct past mistakes by paying back money to those gay soldiers who lived through the policy. We love supporting governments and people who have the guts to correct past errors and apologize for wrongful behavior, and we’re so stoked that Germany is making such significant strides!

Not only that, but the paycheck goes a long way, and hopefully, this will set the stage for even more tolerance and celebration of the LGBTQ community for years to come.
