Do you struggle with relationships? Or maybe you find that you have a hard time setting and keeping life goals? If so, you may have considered using the services of either a dating coach or a therapist.

But what exactly is a relationship coach, and how do they differ between a therapist? We’ll outline exactly what this difference is and how to determine if you should get a relationship coach or a therapist.

What’s The Difference?

A dating or life coach is a professional who coaches clients on how to improve upon their personal and romantic life. Through a series of methods, including discussion, role-playing, behavior modeling, and more, dating coaches help clients improve their interpersonal skills to mine healthy, bountiful relationships.

However, dating coaches are not trained professionals and are unregulated, which means anyone can be a dating coach without being licensed or without holding any certificate.

Therapists, on the other hand, are part of the medical community. Therapists must complete 3,000 hours of supervised practice and are well versed in mental health difficulties, diagnosis and assessment. Additionally, therapists must be educated with a minimum of a master’s degree in psychology or counseling and are licensed in the states they offer services in.

Additionally, since therapists are a regulated service, therapists take insurance, whereas relationship coaches get paid privately through the client.

Should I Get A Coach or a Therapist?

If you need help finding direction, or want help understanding how you can be a better partner or gain better insight into your romantic life, a relationship coach could be very helpful. However, if you are struggling with something a bit more serious, whether it be anxiety, depression, or something greater, you should seek medical help through a therapist.

In the end, you know your body the best. If you suspect the issues you have are fairly minor that can be talked through with a relationship expert, it can’t hurt to book a few sessions to see if a relationship coach can help you reach your goals. However, if you suspect you are struggling with some more serious underlying issues, you may need help from a trained medical professional.
